Top 10 Tips for Kids and Teens using Social Media

  1. Think twice before uploading photos or posting private information about yourself or your family.  The whole  world may see it and you need to maintain a good online reputation for future employment. Do not use your own photo as a profile picture.
  2. Check your social media friends list and remove friends YOU DO NOT know, while only accepting future friend requests from people who you DO know, like and trust.
  3. Make sure you secure your social media profiles e.g. using the “Timeline and Tagging” and “Privacy” options on Facebook, setting your Instagram to Private and securing Snapchat account.
  4. Never meet with a stranger you have meet online. If you do want to meet, ensure you are accompanied by a parent or adult.
  5. Respect other people’s privacy and seek permission before posting information that they may feel is private between you.
  6. Disable location services on mobile devices to ensure that your location information is not disclosed when you post your content online (Geotagging).
  7. Use hard to guess passwords and do not use common names, places or words contained in the dictionary. Do not use the same password on multiple sites or devices and keep it safe by using LastPass or KeePass password managers. Use two-factor authentication on sites that provide it. Click here...
